Returnability: getting people to come back to your website again and again
On average, a person has to visit an ecommerce store 7 times before they buy. Most business websites fail to get over 95% of their visitors to return even once. Bad design or slow pages can play a part, but usually there is just simply no reason to return. There is nothing on the website to engage the visitor, nothing that is unique, nothing for them to do.
Things to consider:
-
Examine your website in all the popular browsers and in different resolutions (different sized monitors display web pages at different resolutions). Consider the design of your website and, if possible, carry out a simple usability study with a small "focus" group (drawn perhaps from colleagues, other business people and, if possible, your own clients).
-
Gather and review statistical facts about your website such as how long pages take to load depending on the connection people are using. Look at the copy on the site, paying particular attention to the “calls to action” on each page.
- Finally, look at how “accessible” your site is to users with various visual difficulties and motor skills (not everyone has 20-20 vision or can comfortably use a mouse accurately!)
